Nettorama managing director Michel Mattheeuws: “This is a natural moment and a logical combination. Nettorama and Boni are both family businesses. Successful A-brand discounters, which in just over 50 years have grown into stable retail chains with loyal customers. We have the same DNA, are financially sound and complement each other well. I look forward to the cooperation with Boni. Customers will soon be able to shop in over 80 Nettorama shops for the best fresh produce, the lowest prices and attractive offers.”

Boni director Bouke van der Wal is proud of what Boni has achieved as an independent supermarket formula and stresses the importance of scale: “We are both successful in the market and financially robust. Boni is in excellent shape. Locally, we have built a very good name for ourselves with our formula. We have achieved this partly due to the personal commitment and involvement of all our employees. They are a very important success factor. Joining forces with Nettorama makes us both stronger. Expansion is necessary in the current market conditions to continue serving customers at the lowest prices and to remain attractive as an employer.”

The familiar Boni will gradually disappear as a brand name. The aim is to convert all Boni supermarkets in the next few years. “No concessions will be made on price and quality,” Van der Wal said. According to Mattheeuws, merging with Boni is crucial for the continued success of Nettorama. “Both family businesses are entering a new phase. We have been reliable when it comes to price since our establishment in 1968 by Mr Bastmeijer and we will keep it that way. We will remain A-brand discounter. Boni is a wonderful shop format. I am impressed by the visible role they play in local communities. We have taken good time to get to know each other’s businesses and are confident about this move.”

Due to the good spread of Nettorama and Boni shops, all jobs will be retained in the shops. The same applies to the distribution centres. The Nettorama and Boni shops are currently supplied from Oosterhout and Nijkerk respectively. This will not change. There are some overlapping activities at the head offices, as a result of which some functions will eventually disappear. When this will take place depends partly on the conversion rate of the Boni supermarkets and the integration of head office activities.
